A graduate level course in educational leadership led me to shadow and interview Waine in April 2012. Waine definitely has an intense curiosity and is self-motivated, but what was more insightful to me, as a teacher considering future leadership roles, is that Waine has a clear vision for the iMentor organization. His time spent volunteering allowed him to slowly internalize the needs of iMentor and what work it may entail.

My favorite quote from the interview: “We are here for something much bigger than ourselves…. and that is our legacy if and when we leave”.

This is a perspective that I've never really considered - that there is actually a stigma of coming from for-profit vs. non-profit in the job market as a whole that is almost analogous to an enterprise vs. startup. That it's more of a meritocracy regardless of scale.

My last girlfriend spent several years in clothing retail on an extended break from college. Upon going back and getting her bachelors she landed a job working as an event coordinator at the main museum here in San Diego.

What really impressed upon me about the whole experience is how much responsibility she was given and *fast*. After about a year of (very intense) work she was promoted to the same level as a co-worker who has an MFA from Stanford and significant industry experience.
